With the Lisbon Treaty in place and the European Union increasingly involved in international crisis management and stabilization operations in places near and far, this volume revisits the trajectory of a European strategic culture. Specifically, it studies the usefulness of its application in a variety of circumstances, including the EU's operations in Africa and the Balkans as well as joint operations with NATO and the United Nations. The contributors find that strategic culture is a useful tool to explain and understand the EU's civilian and military operations, not in the sense of a 'cause', but as a European normative framework of preferences and constraints. Accordingly, classical notions of strategic culture in the field of international security must be adapted to highlight the specific character of Europe's strategic culture, especially by taking the interaction with the United Nations and NATO into account. Though at variance over the extent to which security and defence missions have demonstrated or promoted a shared strategic culture in Europe, the authors reveal a growing sense that a cohesive strategic culture is critical in the EU's ambition of being a global actor. Globalization, immigration and economic crisis challenge the conceptions of nations, trans-national institutions and post-ethnic societies which are central topics in social sciences' discourses. This book examines in an interdisciplinary and international comparative way structures of national identity which are in conflict with or supporting multi-ethnic diversity and trans-national connectivity. The book's first section seeks to clarify the concepts of national identity, nationalism, patriotism and cosmopolitism and to operationalize them consistently. The next section regards the diversity within national states and the consequences for the management of identity and intra-national integration. The third section focuses on external integration between different nations by searching for the "squaring of the circle" between the bonding with co-patriots and the critical reflection of one's own national perspective in relation to others. Our interest in the statistical modeling of data on the timing of recidivism began in the mid 1970s when we were both junior members of the eco nomics department at the University of North Carolina. At that time, methods of analyzing qualitative and limited variables were being developed rapidly in the econometric literature, and we became interested in finding a suitable application for these new methods. Data on the timing of recidivism offered unique and interesting statistical challenges, such as skewness of the distribution and the presence of censoring. Being young and foolish, we decided it would be fun to try something "really" difficult. And, being young and ignorant, we were blissfully unaware of the con current developments in the statistical modeling of survival times that were then appearing in the biostatistics, operations research, and criminological literatures. In the course of some earlier research, we had learned that the North Carolina Department of Correction had an unusually well-developed data base on their inmates. We approached the Department and asked if they would be interested in working with us to develop models that would predict when their former charges would return to their custody. They agreed because they were interested in using such models to evaluate rehabilitative programs and alternative prison management systems and to help project future prison populations."

Der funfte Band der Reihe 'Blickpunkt Gesellschaft' widmet sich dem Thema 'Ethnische Gruppen in Deutschland'. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Ergebnisse der Allgemeinen Bevoelkerungsumfrage der Sozialwissenschaften (ALLBUS) zur Verbreitung und Erklarung auslanderfeindlicher und antisemitischer Einstellungen in der deutschen Bevoelkerung. Aber die in Deutschland lebenden Auslander sind nicht nur als Einstellungsobjekte Gegenstand dieses Buches. Vielmehr werden verschiedene Datenquellen (u.a. das Soziooekonomische Panel und die Auslanderbefragungen des Instituts MARPLAN) intensiv genutzt, um den Leser auch uber die soziale Struktur von Deutschlands Zuwanderern, uber ihre Lebenssituation und -perspektive sowie uber ihre Sicht des Verhaltnisses zwischen Deutschen und Auslandern zu informieren.

Ziel dieses Buches ist es zu zeigen, wie sich im Kontext empirischer Evaluationsforschung der Rational Choice-Ansatz als integratives, transdisziplinares Rahmenkonzept zur Modellierung vermittelnder, kausaler Mechanismen nutzen lasst. Anhand einer langsschnittlichen Evaluationsstudie, bei der der Einfluss von zwei verkehrspolitischen Massnahmen auf die PKW-Nutzung und die Nutzung anderer Verkehrsmittel untersucht wird, wird das Rational Choice-Konzept theoriegeleiteter Evaluationsforschung praktisch demonstriert.

Gegenstand des Buches sind die wichtigsten Ergebnisse einer reprasentativen Langsschnittstudie zur Jugendsexualitat. Anhand quantitativer und qualitativer Befragungsverfahren wurden 1500 Jugendliche in Ost- und Westdeutschland zu Liebe, Partnerschaft und Sexualverhalten befragt. In diesem Zusammenhang werden auch zentrale Themen wie Aids, Schwangerschaftsabbruch, Verhutung und Familienplanung angesprochen. Ein wichtiges Merkmal dieser Studie liegt in der Kombination quantitativer und qualitativer Befragungsverfahren, die es ermoglichen, spezifische Konfliktfelder der Jugendsexualitat wie z.B. Schwangerschaftskonflikt, Kind und/oder Karriere und Aids-Pravention zwischen Sollen und Wollen herauszuarbeiten. Die zeitliche Veranderung bzw. Stabilitat von Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen wird dadurch berucksichtigt, dass die Studie als Wiederholungsbefragung im Abstand von einem Jahr angelegt ist. Neben der Darstellung der wesentlichen deskriptiven Ergebnisse werden mogliche Ursachen zentraler Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen empirisch uberpruft und anschaulich dargestellt. Als theoretische Grundlage dienen die Theorie geplanten Verhaltens und der Rational-Choice-Ansatz."

Der Werkstoff Stahl wurde im Schiffbau erst vor 150 Jahren eingefuhrt. Der UEbergang vorn Holzschiffbau zum Stahlschiffbau vollzog sich allmahlich und war in der UEbergangsphase durch einen Kornpositbau gekennzeichnet, d.h. durch Schiffe, die kom- biniert aus Holz und Stahl gefertigt wurden /1/. Das erste bedeutende Schiff, dessen Koerper komplett aus Stahl bestand, war die 1858 fertiggestellte "Great Eastern". Fur das Schiff mit einer Verdrangung von 32 000 t wurde durchgangig die Niet- technik fur die Verbindungen eingesetzt /2/. Die Klassifika- tionsgesellschaften erteilten 1880 dem harteren Stahl die Zulassung, der rasch Einzug in den Schiffbau hielt. Schweissen als Fugeverfahren kam erst mit der Entwicklung der ummantelten Elektrode 1902 zur Anwendung und wurde zunachst be- sonders fur Reparaturen eingesetzt. 1920 lief dann das erste ganz geschweisste seegehende Schiff in England vorn Stapel, die "Fullegar". Die konstruktive Ausfuhrung entsprach jedoch noch vollstandig den genieteten Schiffen, ihre Aussenhaut bestand aus gejoggelten Platten, die uberlappt durch Kehlnahte verbunden wurden /3/. Im grossen Umfang kam die Schweisstechnik als Fuge- verfahren im Schiffbau erst ab 1940 zum Einsatz, als Fracht- schiffe in geschweisster Ausfuhrung gebaut wurden /4/. Die ersten Stahlschiffswerften entwickelten sich allmahlich aus den Holzschiffswerften und waren zunachst reine Manufakturen.
